  • Roman Polanski: A Wanted And Desired Timeline

    Like a typical lawyer, Popsquire enjoys a helpful timeline.  So, while we await next steps in the Roman Polanski extradition process, take some time to review history.

    1967: Polanski directs “The Fearless Vampire Killers,” starring his future wife and Charles Manson victim, Sharon Tate.

    1968: Polanski and Tate get married in London.

    1968: “Rosemary’s Baby,” written by Polanski, premieres.

    1969: Polanski’s wife is murdered while eight months pregnant.

    1971: “The Tragedy of MacBeth,” Polanski’s first film after Tate’s death, premieres.

    1974: Polanski’s “Chinatown” is released and receives critical acclaim.

    1977: (a) Polanski is indicted on six felony counts for allegedly having sex with a 13-year-old girl in Jack Nicholson’s house; (b) Polanski is released from jail after a 42-day psychiatric evaluation and enters a guilty plea on one count of unlawful sex with a minor in exchange for “time served” as a sentence; (c) the judge rejects the plea bargain agreement and issues a 50-year prison sentence; (d) Polanski flees to France.

    1978: An arrest warrant is issued for Polanski.

    1979: Polanski releases his next film, “Tess,” which he dedicates to his deceased wife.

    1997: Polanski directs a stage version of Tate’s film, “The Fearless Vampire Killers,” in Vienna.

    1998: Polanski becomes a member of the French Academy of Fine Arts.

    2002: Polanski wins the Palme d’Or award at the Cannes Film Festival as well as a Best Director Oscar for “The Pianist.”

    2003: The alleged victim of the 1977 sex crime, Samantha Geimer, publicly states that she wants Polanski to return to the US so that they both can put the ordeal behind them.

    2008: (a) Documentary, “Roman Polanski: Wanted And Desired,” is released and raises issues of judicial misconduct during the 1977 sex crime proceedings; (b) Polanski’s attorney files a motion to dismiss the 1977 case in LA based on judicial and prosecutorial misconduct.

    2009

    February: A Los Angeles denies motion to dismiss because he wants Polanski to appear in court for the hearing.

    September: (a) Polanski’s attorneys file an appeal of the court’s refusal to proceed with motion to dismiss without Polanski’s presence; (b) Zurich Film Festival promotes Polanski’s attendance to receive lifetime achievement award; (c) LA authorities obtain another arrest warrant and alert Swiss police; (d) Zurich police arrest Polanski in the airport.
