David Letterman: Harassment Policy Ok With Dating
David Letterman’s production company, Worldwide Pants, has an anti-harassment policy. Click here to read it and notice that it does not prohibit dating among co-workers. Big deal.
TMZ is making an issue out of the fact that policy does not prohibit consensual co-worker dating. In reality, however, many companies do not prohibit dating in the workplace. The focus is almost always on harassment, not innocent dating.
The tricky part is that Letterman is in a powerful leadership position. If any dating scenario turns into a harassment claim against him, the company and Letterman could face significant legal fees defending any lawsuit and, ultimately, pay large sums of damages resulting from civil liability.
Translation: Dating is complicated wherever you do it. If you do it in the office, additional risks of civil liability and attorneys’ fees attach to the scenario. You just have to ask yourself if it’s worth it.
