  • The Popsquire Beat: Dec. 6 – 12

    December 12th, 2008

The Popsquire Beat provides this week’s most entertaining collisions between pop culture and law.  See below for the accompanying podcast, and enjoy!

    1.  Alyssa Milano filed for a restraining order against alleged 54-year-old stalker, Jeff Turner.

Court documents accuse him of breaking into Alyssa’s home and obsessively trying to contact her, and a court hearing is on calendar for January 21, 2009.  Alyssa wants her alleged stalker to know Who’s The Boss.

    2.  A London lawsuit brought Madonna a Ray of Light!

On Oct. 19, 2008, the UK’s Mail on Sunday published an 11-photo spread of private pics of Madonna’s 2000 wedding to Guy Ritchie, which were stolen from M’s Beverly Hills home by an interior designer.  A London High Court judge found the tabloid liable for invasion of privacy and copyright infringement after publishing the stolen photos.  In short, the sticky lawsuit became sweet for Madonna!

    3.  And, Miley Cyrus is almost legal…

After a week-long trial, jurors in Keanu Reeves’ personal injury/paparazzo trial set out on the Excellent Adventure called “deliberations.”  After listening to evidence about whether Keanu hit the plaintiff-photog with his car, the jury returned a unanimous verdict in favor of Keanu.  In typical LA style, the judge concluded the trial by saying, “Bogus Journey adjourned, dude.”

After John Cusack’s stalker allegedly violated a restraining order prohibiting her from going anywhere near the actor’s home or businesses for the next 10 years, a Los Angeles judge issued a bench warrant for her arrest.  Cusack believes Emily Leatherman has been stalking him for over a year and a half, including throwing love letters over his fence.  Sadly, she threatened to hurt herself because he didn’t Say Anything in return.

And, Melissa Etheridge is not The Only One mad about the passage of Prop. 8 in California.  But, she is the only one threatening not to pay taxes.  In a blog post, Melissa reminds everyone of “that taxation without representation thing from the history books” and implies she shouldn’t have to pay taxes because she is no longer a “full citizen.”  Don’t fret, Melissa, if you decide not to pay, Popsquire will Come To Your (Jailhouse) Window for a visit!

The Popsquire Beat provides highlights from this week’s most entertaining collisions between pop culture and law.  See below for the audio podcast!

First up, Britney Spears is still a Slave 4 Her Dad!  Contrary to speculation that Britney’s conservatorship might end this week, it actually was made permanent.  The court’s ruling leaves her dad in charge of her estate, finances, and legal affairs.  Jamie Spears’ job is to make sure Brit doesn’t say, “Oops, I shaved my head again.”

Love Do Cost A Thing…$545,000, to be exact!  A Los Angeles judge upheld an arbitrator’s April 2007 award to Jennifer Lopez against her first husband, Ojani Noa.  J-Lo previously sued Ojani to prevent publication of a tell-all book, in violation of a 2005 confidentiality agreement.  In short, Jennifer and the judge are saying to Ojani: “Let’s not Get Loud!”

And, 12 jurors heard evidence this week to determine if a paparazzo lawsuit against Keanu Reeves is a Bogus Journey.  The photog-plaintiff claims that Keanu’s car hit him while the pap was taking pics of the actor in 2007.  The jury must decide whether the trial was a Walk In The Clouds for Keanu or a most Excellent Adventure for the plaintiff.

The Popsquire Beat provides highlights from this week’s most entertaining collisions between pop culture and law.  See below for the accompanying podcast.

First up, the jury in Britney Spears’ misdemeanor invalid driver’s license trial was unable to Do Somethin’ this week– make a unanimous decision.  After two days of jury deadlock and the judge’s pleas to Gimme More, the court finally had no choice but to declare a mistrial.  In short, deciding where Britney lived and should have had a license turned out to be a very Toxic decision for 12 of her “peers!”

David Duchovny is suing the UK’s Daily Mail for defamation and invasion of privacy, arising out of a recent story claiming that he had an extra-marital affair with his tennis coach, Edit Pakay. Seeking damages in excess of $1 million, the lawsuit alleges that the Daily Mail published the story, even though they knew it was false.  The X-Files star now wants everyone to know that he didn’t get XXX with that woman!

First up, Britney Spears stood trial this week in Los Angeles for a 2007 misdemeanor invalid driver’s license charge.  Twelve jurors wasted judicial resources examining evidence about whether she should have had a CA driver’s license.  Britney didn’t testify, but her dad told jurors that although she spends the majority of her time in LA, Louisiana is her real home.  For the most convincing portion of his testimony, he explained: “It’s Britney, bitch!

David and Victoria Beckham were burgled!  Police busted domestic workers for suspicion of theft from the Beckham’s home, located north of London.  Several of the couple’s items — including Victoria’s dresses and David’s soccer memorabilia — ended up on eBay. In short, someone other than Victoria has David’s balls!

And, the Madonna/Guy Ritchie Secret is out — they are getting a divorce.  Apparently, she’s Hung Up on A-Rod and already Dressing Him Up In Her Love, which may have sent Guy over the Borderline.  Meanwhile, the custody battle is about to start Burnin’ Up as Guy will have to fight hard to prevent his kids David and Rocco from living an American Life.  For the kids’ sake, let’s hope the fight doesn’t go Deeper and Deeper!
