Khloe Kardashian Turns Herself In

July 18, 2008

Because you are obsessed with Popsquire, you know that Kim Kardashian’s younger sister, Khloe, had until today to turn herself in to serve a 30-day sentence in Los Angeles County jail for violating probation following a DUI arrest. And…she is in custody now!

How much time will she actually serve?

Remember, Nicole Richie was sentenced to four days and served only 82 minutes. Lindsay Lohan was sentenced to two days and served only 84 minutes. Unless county jail suddenly has become less crowded, it’s unlikely she will serve anything close to her 30 days.

In short, Khloe’s jail sentence may last as long as her fame! Click here to review which other celebs recently have served jail time for DUI’s and probation violations.

Mischa Makes Popsquire Less MADD

July 17, 2008

Mischa Barton must know how MADD Popsquire has been at her!  That’s the only explanation for this repentance in the August issue of Nylon magazine:

“That was a low point for me. I never, ever would have thought I would be arrested…I was disappointed because it associated me with a group of girls that I would rather not be associated with.”

If you don’t know why she must repent, then you must be new to Popsquire and should click here, then aqui, and then ici.

Step By Step, Lindsay!

July 16, 2008

Popsquire congratulates Lindsay Lohan!

Yesterday, a Beverly Hills judge confirmed that Lindsay — unlike Khloe Kardashian and Brian Bonsall — is satisfying her probation requirements. So far, she has completed her required visit to a morgue and community service.

Next steps: (1) Lindsay must complete an alcohol education class; and (2) update the court by January 2009.

In celebration of Lindsay’s progress, Popsquire dedicates the NKOTB hit, “Step By Step,” to her. Enjoy!

Khloe Kardashian Kickin’ It In Jail Soon

July 15, 2008

Kim Kardashian’s younger sister, Khloe, has until July 18 to turn herself in to serve a 30-day sentence in Los Angeles County jail for violating probation following a DUI arrest. “She admitted to failing to complete [roadside cleanup duty] and enroll in an alcohol education class,” according to L.A. City Attorney spokesman Frank Mateljan.

Popsquire’s Prediction…

Khloe will not serve the entire 30 days! Nicole Richie was sentenced to four days and served only 82 minutes. Lindsay Lohan was sentenced to two days and served only 84 minutes.

There’s no reason to believe Khloe will serve anywhere close to 30 days, unless prisons have suddenly become less crowded.  Click here to review which other celebs recently have served jail time for DUI’s and probation violations.

No DUI Charges For Snoop’s Wife

July 7, 2008

DUI Update

Because you are obsessed with Popsquire’s running tally of celebrity DUI arrests, you likely remember that Snoop Dogg’s wife was arrested in June for suspicion of driving under the influence of marijuana.

Today, according to TMZ, the Orange County D.A’s office has decided not to move forward with the case due to lack of evidence “to prove her driving was impaired.”

Popsquire typically has an original one-liner, but TMZ said it best today: “Apparently being Snoop Dogg’s wife isn’t enough evidence.”

The Popsquire Beat: June 30-July 4

July 4, 2008

The Popsquire Beat provides weekly briefs with the most entertaining pop culture/law collisions of the week!

First up, the Christie Brinkley divorce trial started this week with a bang. Actually 12 – that’s the number of times Peter Cook admitted to having sex with his 19-year-old assistant, Diana Bianchi. To show Bianchi he cared, Cook also would leave envelopes full of cash hidden around the office for her to find. Who is he…the tooth fairy?

Verne Troyer, aka Mini Me, sued TMZ for posting a snippet of his sex tape on web. A Los Angeles judge initially ordered TMZ to take the snippet down. Then, after learning that Mini Me’s girlfriend created the tape and gave TMZ permission to post the snippet, the judge approved putting the snippet back up. Is Popsquire the only one who’s uncomfortable talking about Mini Me’s snippet going up and down?

And, Lindsay Lohan, who celebrated her 22nd birthday this week, will not be getting a birthday card from Popsquire this year. There were no car crashes, DUIs, lawsuits, or stolen fur coats. Instead, Lindsay had a small, private party at the Roosevelt hotel without any incident. Who does that??!

Have a good holiday weekend. Please don’t drink and drive.

Stay MADD

June 17, 2008

In addition to the arrest of Snoop Dog’s wife this weekend for suspicion of DUI, Taylor Dane was sentenced yesterday in connection with her March arrest for suspicion of DUI.  In exchange for entering a no contest plea to the lesser charge of reckless driving, Dane was sentenced to 24 months’ probation and ordered to pay a fine, according to TMZ.

April…

  2. Despite rumors of a possible child endangerment charge, Richie Sambora was charged only with two DUI counts arising out of his March 25 DUI arrest.
  3. Carmelo Anthony (Denver Nuggets forward) was arrested in Colorado on suspicion of DUI.

Popsquire Is MADD Yet Again

June 16, 2008

While the rest of us took cabs or assigned designated drivers this weekend, Snoop Dog’s wife, Shante Broadus, was arrested at 12:15 Saturday morning in Fullerton, CA for suspected driving under the influence.

Below is reminder that Shante is not the only “celebrity” who has been in trouble with the law for suspicion of DUI. When will it stop?!?

May…

  1. Scott Weiland served jail time for his second DUI offense and still is required to complete an 18-month alcohol program, pay nearly $2,000 in fines, and participate in a four-year probation period.

April…

  1. Angie Everheart was arrested on suspicion of DUI.

Get MADD!

May 13, 2008

Scott Weiland was released from jail last night, after serving a whopping 10 hours in jail yesterday for his November DUI arrest. He was sentenced to 192 hours, but y’all know how it goes — courts are the biggest exaggerators around! He also is required to complete an 18-month alcohol program, pay nearly $2,000 in fines, and participate in a four-year probation period.

As a reminder, Weiland joins a long list of celebs who have been arrested and/or served time for DUI’s recently:

April…

  2. Despite rumors of a possible child endangerment charge, Richie Sambora was charged only with two DUI counts arising out of his March 25 DUI arrest.
  3. Lucille Gatchell, the 64-year-old alleged drunk driver who crashed into Sandra Bullock, pleaded not guilty to DUI charges in court.
  4. Carmelo Anthony (Denver Nuggets forward) was arrested in Colorado on suspicion of DUI.
  5. Thomas Jane pleaded not guilty to DUI charges and is expected back in court on May 19.

Reformed Robert Downey Jr.

May 9, 2008

Popsquire celebrates rehabilitation in the form of Robert Downey Jr.  With Iron Man hitting the $200 million mark as the weekend approaches, it’s time to take a trip down memory lane and congratulate RDJ for emerging from these prior collisions with the law:

August 1996: RDJ was arrested for drunk driving, heroin possession, and possession of an unloaded pistol in his pickup truck.  He was given a suspended three-year prison sentence and granted probation with requirements of random drug testing and drug counseling.

October 1997:  RDJ’s probation was revoked after continued drug use.

December 1997: RDJ was jailed for 180 days for violating probation.

February 1998:  RDJ got into fight with another inmate at the Los Angeles County Jail where he was serving time for a probation violation and was treated for a cut over his nose.

March 1998: RDJ was released from jail to complete his six-month jail sentence at a drug rehabilitation center.

August 2000: RDJ was released from prison on $5,000 bail.

April 2001: RDJ was arrested for being under the influence of cocaine.

July 2001: RDJ was sentenced to three years probation, including one year in a continued drug rehabilitation program, as part of an agreement to keep him out of prison.

Dourdan Denies Possession

May 5, 2008

Because you are a faithful Popsquire follower, you know that there are always at least two sides to every collision between pop culture and law. Such is the case with soon-to-be-former CSI star Gary Dourdan’s recent arrest for possession of drugs, including cocaine, heroin, and ecstasy, after leaving the Coachella music festival.

In an email to Access Hollywood’s Shaun Robinson, Dourdan writes:

“And the after party, it ran me ragged, but I’m glad pulling over did prevent a DUI. I recommend not driving at all, but a little kip (nap) is always good (on either side of the road LOL).

I am blessed that the Sgt. realized that the luggage carrying whatever they found was not mine and that my tests have been coming back negative…I’ve been happy to cooperate in any way to clear myself and go on with my blessed life.”

Popsquire’s perspective…

Two elements that the prosecution must prove in any drug possession case are: (1) knowledge of the substance’s presence; and (2) knowledge of the substance’s character as a controlled substance.

Based on Dourdan’s statement — that he had other people in the car and had no knowledge of the drugs — it looks like the prosecutors may have to make a circumstantial case. In that case, if a reasonable interpretation of events points to innocence, Dourdan wins.

Round one: Prosecution.

Round two: Dourdan.

What’s next?!?

Are You MADD Yet?

April 29, 2008

In addition to supermodel Angie Everheart’s recent arrest for suspicion of DUI, Stone Temple Pilot’s Scott Weiland now has been sentenced to 192 hours in county jail for a November DUI arrest — his second DUI offense!  He also is required to complete an 18-month alcohol program, pay nearly $2,000 in fines, and participate in a four-year probation period.

Richie Sambora Rocks A DUI

March 26, 2008

popsquirecuff.jpgAnother day, another celebrity DUI! That’s just how they roll these days…

Richie Sambora was arrested last night for drunk driving (reportedly with his 10-year-old daughter in the car!), adding his name to this fun list of celebs who either don’t know how to call a cab or choose to endanger the lives of people around them:

  1. Nicole Richie: sentenced to four days…served 82 minutes.
  2. Paris Hilton: sentenced to 45 days…served 22 (drama-filled) days

Hulk Hit With Lawsuit

March 25, 2008

Hulk Hogan better start flexing some legal muscles!

In a new lawsuit, the guardian for John Graziano — the incapacitated 22-year-old active-duty Marine who was a passenger in Hogan Knows Best 17-year-old co-star Nick Hogan’s Toyota Supra when it crashed in late August 2007 — seeks to recover damages from Hulk and Linda for their son’s actions. Here are some highlights from the lawsuit’s allegations and theories:

  1. Nick negligently operated his Toyota Supra by racing another man in a Dodge Viper, a car also owned by Hulk.
  2. The Hogans were aware of Nick’s speed fetish and knew that he had altered his vehicle for racing.
  3. Hulk purchased alcohol the day of the accident and “knew or should have known” Nick was driving under the influence and failed to take appropriate action.

Popsquire’s perspective…

Parents of underage drivers take an enormous financial risk every time their child gets behind the wheel. In many states, parents can be held liable for the negligent acts of minor drivers, and most parents are not even aware of the extent of the liability.

Popsquire is surprised that the Hogan’s insurance providers didn’t settle this case before it resulted in formal litigation. Stay tuned!

Rourke Released From Community Service

March 21, 2008

popsquirecuff.jpgAccording to the Palm Beach Post, Mickey Rourke admits running a red light on his Vespa and making a U-Turn. Although charged with a DUI, he was found guilty only for reckless driving and sentenced to: (1) a six-month probation; (2) fines and costs totaling $1,178.75; and (3) and 50 hours of community service.

Get this…The court allowed him to buy the community service hours instead of performing them, at a rate of $10 per hour.

Popsquire’s perspective…

In a system where fame and money often have provided exemptions to justice, this represents a lack of interest in rehabilitative measures that can teach important lessons.

While Rourke did not injure anyone when he ran the red light, he may not be so lucky the next time.  Performing community service likely would make him — and anyone else in the same situation — examine his actions more closely.

And, BTW, $10 per hour is ridonculous.  Make him pay an amount equal to his hourly rate!
