Cher’s offspring, Chastity Bono, announced today that she is in the early stages of gender reassignment.
Whatever makes Chastity happy is cool with Popsquire, but the loss of legal rights associated with this change is so not cool.
FYI: There is no federal law explicitly prohibiting discrimination against transgender people in employment, housing, public accommodations or any other area of law. And, only a handful of states have laws specifically prohibiting discrimination on the basis of gender identity and expression.
Britney Spears, Miley Cyrus, and Heidi Montagbelieve you should be able to tweet whomever you want.

On her official Twitter page, Britney (or someone writing on her behalf) writes: “Love is love! People should be able to do whatever makes them happy!” Mileyexplains to Perez Hilton that “Jesus loves you AND your partner and wants you to know how much He cares!”
Heidi even invokes the Bible and invites herself to Perez’s hypothetical wedding:
“God says in the Bible that we should love our neighbor and He created us all as equals. I know in my heart that gays and lesbians should have the same government rights that Spencer and I will when we get married. So, yes, this blonde Christian believes in gay marriage and I hope to one day go to YOUR wedding, Perez!!!”
For the weekend’s collision between pop culture and civil rights, Tyra Banks, Clay Aiken, Vanessa Williams, Chris Noth, and several other celebs attended the 20th annual GLAAD Media Awards in NYC on Saturday.
An Asian woman thinks Miley Cyrus is no class act, so she filed a class action!
Representing one million Asian Pacific Islanders who live in LA County, plaintiff Lucie J. Kim says the now-infamous photo of Miley and her friends slanting their eyes constitutes a civil rights violation. She claims that Miley “knew or should have known that her image would be publicly disseminated via the media, which Cyrus knew focused on her private life, specifically TMZ.” The plaintiff wants $4,000 per class member, for a total of $4 billion!
This makes no sense. And, that’s Popsquire’s official legal opinion.
For the continuing collision between pop culture and politics, Ellen DeGeneres is talkin’!
Ellen released this statement on her website last night about the Presidential election and California’s Prop. 8:
“Watching the returns on election night was an amazing experience. Barack Obama is our new president. Change is here. I, like millions of Americans, felt like we had taken a giant step towards equality. We were watching history.
This morning, when it was clear that Proposition 8 had passed in California, I can’t explain the feeling I had. I was saddened beyond belief. Here we just had a giant step towards equality and then on the very next day, we took a giant step away.
I believe one day a ‘ban on gay marriage’ will sound totally ridiculous. In the meantime, I will continue to speak out for equality for all of us.”
For today’s syndicated sitcom collision with the law, Fran Drescher is urging Californians to vote No on Prop 8, the initiative that seeks the eliminate the right for same sex couples to marry.

For this morning’s collision between pop culture and politics, check out this PSA from the cast of Ugly Betty urging Californians to vote No on Prop. 8, which seeks to eliminate gay marriage rights.
While voters in California, Arizona, and Florida are faced with proposed laws to ban gay marriage, Popsquire invites you to watch this clip from Lance Bass’ appearance on Chelsea Lately.
San Francisco witnessed a pop culture/law collision last night — the premiere of Gus Van Sant’s new film, Milk. Starring Sean Penn, Emile Hirsch, and Diego Luna, the film follows the life of Harvey Milk, the first openly gay man elected to a public office (and later assassinated) in the United States.
Milk opens is in theaters on December 5. Watch the trailer below.
Like a typical lawyer, Popsquire loves a good feud!
In an ET interview, George Takei takes on William Shatner’s recent YouTube tirade in which he claims Takei didn’t extend an invitation to attend his wedding. Takei says this is not true and extends Shatner another invite — to help fight Prop 8, the California initiative seeking to eliminate the right to marry for same sex couples.
Ellen is speaking out on her official blog, urging all California residents to vote no on Prop. 8, a voter initiative that seeks to outlaw gay marriage:
Hey everybody. There’re only a couple weeks left before we vote. In California there’s a proposition that’s trying to take away my right to be married. And if it passes, my marriage will probably no longer be valid.
The supporters of Proposition 8 have raised more than $25 million just to discriminate against same-sex couples who want to get married. That’s a lot of money.
I can think of 25 million other uses for all that money:
- How about paying teachers more?
- What about helping those people who just lost their homes in the recent fires?
- How about buying a pony for every child in California? How much fun would that be?!
Don’t let them convince you that discrimination is okay just because they can pay for a commercial. It’s wrong. Please vote NO ON PROPOSITION 8! I’m begging you. If you vote no on Prop 8, I’ll buy you a pony.
