Tune in tonight to CNN’s “Showbiz Tonight” for a healthy debate about sex, tv, and censorship. It’s Popsquire vs. the Parents Television Council, a non-profit organization that believes prime time tv ”seems to be actively seeking to undermine marriage by consistently painting it in a negative light.”
Enjoy!

Popsquire loves positive collisions between pop culture and law!
In an effort to raise awareness for World Refugee Day on June 20, Angelina Jolie, who serves as Goodwill Ambassador for the UN Refugee Agency, recorded this PSA. Check it out — it’s only 30 seconds.

ABC’s hit family drama, Brothers & Sisters, just keeps colliding with the law! On last night’s episode, Nora Walker went overboard (as usual) and turned the family home into the romantic setting for Scotty and Kevin’s commitment ceremony.
As Popsquire explained last week, the term “marriage” does not apply to their relationship. However, California law does permit them to enter a “civil union” or a “domestic partnership.” The process is actually very easy. A couple simply needs to fill out a form, pay $33 for processing, and send it in to Secretary of State.
Click here for additional details and instructions.

According to Perez Hilton, Lindsay Lohan’s reps are casting models to advertise Lindsay’s new leggings line. The casting notice, which purports to pay models with “trade,” reads:

CASTING FOR: The Look Book Shoot for 6126 - a new contemporary collection of leggings designed by Lindsay Lohan
USAGE: web, look book, worldwide
RATE: trade
DATE of SHOOT: May 9th 6am call time in Los Feliz (address TBC)
CASTING DATE: May 8, 2008 430pm

Although it may be commonplace for people to work for free in the modeling and entertainment industry, it doesn’t mean it’s legal. With very limited exceptions, every employee must be paid at least minimum wage for all hours worked…and leggings don’t count!

Sunday night’s episode of ABC’s hit drama, Brothers & Sisters, presents an important collision between pop culture and law. If you didn’t watch, you simply need to know that Kevin (the gay brother) asked his boyfriend (Scotty) to “marry” him.
Popsquire’s perspective…
Unfortunately, the use of the term “marry” or “marriage” does not apply to this couple, even in California. Instead, same sex couples in California have the right to enter a domestic partnership, not marriage. This status provides them with many — but not all — of the same rights that opposite sex marriages provide.
For a detailed description of domestic partnership rights, click here.
BTW, Popsquire apologizes for the one-day delay in blogging about this show, but there are only so many hours in a day to blog and watch TV. Give a Popsquire a break, please!
As a peace offering, please accept this Paula Abdul video for “Will You Marry Me?”

Popsquire is thrilled to report a positive collision between pop culture and law, in the form of Ricky Martin. According to YoungHollywood.com, Sr. Martin is visiting Cambodia in an effort to help fight child trafficking. Good for him!
Popsquire defines…
According to the United Nations, child trafficking is the “recruitment, transportation, transfer, harboring or receipt of persons, by means of threat or use of force or other forms of coercion, of abduction, of deception, of the abuse of power or of position of vulnerability or of the giving or receiving of payments or benefits to achieve the consent of a person having control over another person, for the purpose of exploitation.”
Popsquire opines…
The abuse and trafficking of children must be stopped because they have severe consequences on individual and global levels, including: (1) the spread of serious disease, including HIV/AIDS; (2) physical and emotional harm to children; (3) increase in power of criminal organizations; and (4) government corruption.
As a reminder that we live in a connected, global community, Popsquire brings you this global relief classic, “We Are The World.”

Popsquire assumes you konw that today is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. However, did you know that the holiday came about as a collision between pop culture and law?
Yup, MLK is the force behind many civil rights laws in this country, and Stevie Wonder played an integral role in fighting for the holiday. Indeed, Stevie Wonder’s Happy Birthday song is not just a birthday song — it’s a tribute MLK. Take a look at the lyrics here.
