    January 6th, 2009

Kate Hudson and Anne Hathaway strutted down the red carpet last night for the NYC premiere of their upcoming film, “Bride Wars.”

Popsquire expects to laugh at this one as two best friends become rivals when they schedule their respective weddings on the same day.  And…Kate’s character is a lawyer, so she obviously must win the war!

    Follieri vs. Jail

    November 13th, 2008

If Anne Hathaway wanted her ex to rot in jail, then she might be getting her wish…

Raffaello Follieri is asking for a jail transfer because of “unspeakably unsanitary” conditions affecting his health, including rotten food, foul odors and unclean toilets.  According to a letter made available by his lawyer, Raffaello has been held in a windowless dormitory cell with 120 other men where “there is excrement in the shower and rats are roaming freely in the area.”

Raffaello is expected to spend his 4.5 year sentence for wire fraud and money laundering at a somewhat cushy federal camp without prison cells.  Popsquire doesn’t blame him for trying to get there ASAP!

    The People vs. Follieri

    October 23rd, 2008

Just like Popsquire predicted, Raffaello Follieri’s recent request for a three-year sentence was denied.  Instead, a federal court in New York sentenced Anne Hathaway’s ex-boyfriend today to 4.5 years in prison for cheating investors in his Vatican-based financial scheme.

As a reminder, Raffaello pleaded guilty last month to one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud, eight counts of wire fraud and five counts of money laundering by claiming he had Vatican connections that allowed him to buy Catholic Church property at a discount.  He also agreed to forfeit $2.4 million.

    Follieri Faces Sentencing

    October 15th, 2008

Raffaello Follieri is asking a New York federal court to go easy on him!

In a sentencing request, Anne Hathaway’s ex asks the judge to sentence him to no more than three years in prison, instead of the five set forth in his prior plea deal.

Click here to read the parade of reasons/excuses, including: (1) his ill mother; (2) his “unprecedented act of generosity” as a university student when he “provided shelter to a Pakistani refugee and her child;” (3) his donation of thousands of “Prescription Discount Cards to parishioners in Catholic dioceses;” and, most incredulously (4) his inability to resist becoming “intoxicated” with the rich and famous celebrity lifestyle.

    Popsquire’s perspective…

In a time of economic crisis and reports of economic abuses on Wall Street, it’s unlikely that a judge will go easy on a white collar criminal, especially when the case is high profile.  Popsquire will keep you posted!

    Rachel Getting Cash

    October 6th, 2008

Anne Hathaway, whose ex boyfriend is still in jail awaiting sentencing on money laundering and wire fraud charges, has a reason to celebrate!

Not only did she host SNL, but her new film Rachel Getting Married grossed $275,000 in limited release at only nine theaters this weekend. No weekend film made more money per screen — $30,556!

Below is an interview Anne recently did with Popsquire follower, Carly Steel.  Enjoy!

    Follieri Folds

    September 10th, 2008

Just like Popsquire predicted yesterday, Raffaello Follieri (Anne Hathaway’s ex) pleaded guilty in federal court this morning to one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud, eight counts of wire fraud and five counts of money laundering.

He could be sentenced to up to 265 years in prison, but Follieri agreed not to appeal a sentence less than 63 months in prison.  That’s because he likely has entered a plea bargain to serve five years, which will be determined in October.  Popsquire will keep you posted!

    Is Follieri Folding?

    September 9th, 2008

Just like Popsquire predicted in July, Anne Hathaway’s ex Raffaello Follieri may be close to a plea bargain. According to the Wall Street Journal, Follieri may enter an agreement to serve five years in prison if he pleads guilty to federal fraud and money laundering charges.

If he takes the plea, a court hearing may take place early next week.

    Popsquire’s perspective…

Most celebs who are convicted of crimes spend time in state prisons and serve a small fraction of their jail sentence behind bars, especially for DUIs.  Follieri’s case, however, is part of the federal system where there is no parole and prisoners often serve at least 85% of their sentence.   In addition, unless he is allowed to serve time in Italy, Follieri likely would spend his sentence at a somewhat cushy federal camp without prison cells.

    The Devil Diaries

    July 24th, 2008

The FBI has Anne Hathaway’s diaries!

According to the NY Daily News, FBI agents confiscated Anne’s personal diaries during a recent raid on Raffaello Follieri’s $37,500-a-month Trump Tower pad.  Agents also may have seized photos of Follieri with Bill and Hillary Clinton as well as and John Cindy McCain, watches, a Tiffany clock, an antique Bible and personal photos of Anne and her ex.

    Popsquire’s perspective…

Raffaello has been in custody since June 24 on 11 counts of wire fraud and money laundering.  The feds are supposed to return an indictment within 10 court days of taking a suspect into custody.

Those ten days are long gone!  This might mean that Follieri is cooperating with the government to provide dirt on someone else and/or is working on a deal for himself.

    Inside An Indictment

    July 8th, 2008

Anne Hathaway’s ex-boyfriend, Raffaello Follieri, may be indicted tomorrow. Popsquire is here to answer the many questions you recently sent in on this subject…

How does it look for Follieri?

It doesn’t look good. The government’s criminal complaint contains a litany of specific acts of alleged wrongdoing. The U.S. Attorney’s Office was not required to file this kind of document. They could have gone straight to a grand jury seeking an indictment as part of a closed procedure.

Instead, they filed a criminal complaint , which gives the impression that they have a lot of records and evidence to back up the charges.

What is involved in the indictment process?

Between the time that Follieri was taken into custody and the indictment, the government likely was holding grand jury proceedings. There can be anywhere from 16 to 23 grand jurors hearing, and it takes 12 to indict.

The grand jury proceedings are held in secret. Only the prosecution and their witnesses participate. Neither Follieri nor his counsel is permitted to be present or participate. At the conclusion of evidence, the grand jury votes either to indict or not.

    What happens after an indictment?

If an indictment is entered, Follieri pleads not guilty, and then a jury finds him guilty, the judge will make a determination on sentencing about 15-20 weeks after trial.

    Get Smart, Anne!

    June 24th, 2008

Anne Hathaway’s ex-boyfriend, Raffaello Follieri, was arraigned and charged today in Federal Court with six counts of wire fraud and five counts of money laundering.

Among other things described in this court document, Follieri allegedly duped investors into believing that the Vatican appointed him to manage its affairs and, as a result, he claimed that he could purchase Vatican properties at a cheap price.

Now, there’s nothing cheap about his bail! Even if he can post the $21 million in bail, he will remain “home-restricted by an electronic monitoring device and will only be let out for legal, medical, and religious reasons, and only on the island of Manhattan,” according to TMZ.

He’s expected back in court on July 9 for a pre-trial hearing.

    Popsquire’s perspective…

Many Popsquire fans are asking what will happen to Anne…

At this point, it seems unlikely that she will be charged with any crimes. If the government had any evidence that she was involved, it likely would have come out already. Plus, she resigned from the Board of Directors of Follieri’s company a while back.

We can, however, expect that she may be called as a witness — or at least interviewed as part of any ongoing investigation — to the extent she has any knowledge.

Anne better learn to Get Smart out the boyfriends she chooses!

    Jail Dates

    June 9th, 2008

You better pick the right mate, or you might be making a jail date!

    Exhibit A: Amy Winehouse.

After more than seven months in jail, Amy’s husband Blake Fiedler-Civil has pleaded guilty to roughing up a bartender and trying to cover it up. Blake has been in jail almost the entire year that he and Amy have been married.

    Exhibit B: Anne Hathaway.

Anne’s boyfriend, Raffaelo Follieri, was arrested back in April for writing a bad check worth $250,000. Although the misdemeanor charges were dropped, Raffaello is back in the news.

Now, according to the NY Post, The Follieri Foundation — a children’s charity run by Raffaelo — is being investigated by the State Attorney General’s office. Although the AG’s office hasn’t confirmed the subject matter, the investigation followed a discovery that the foundation might have failed to file tax-disclosure forms required of nonprofit groups.

Some girls just love a bad boy. Maybe they should try for a “Father Figure” instead!
