Save The Whale, Save The World
November 26th, 2008
Let’s give Hayden Panettiere something to be thankful for this holiday season!
Given her commitment to fighting commercial whaling, Hayden might buy Popsquire (and you!) a whole jar of cranberry sauce if we continue watching Whale Wars, Fridays at 9pm on Animal Planet.
Whale Wars follows a radical environmental group made up of self-proclaimed eco-pirates whose mission is to stop Japanese fishing vessels from killing whales in Antarctica. Watch below for a clip of Friday’s episode, courtesy of Animal Planet.
Britney Is A Tease
November 26th, 2008
Here’s one more thing to be thankful for as you prepare for the big holiday — a preview of Britney Spears’ next video for the single “Circus.”
Like a good lawyer, Popsquire also encourages multi-tasking! Click here to review a timeline of Britney’s pop culture/law collisions while you watch.
President Pardens The Score
November 26th, 2008Lame duck George W. Bush is a Fugees fan!
In a surprising collision between pop culture and law, George W. commuted the sentence of John Forte, a former Fugees producer who is in prison for cocaine possession with intent to distribute. Forte was found guilty of possession of 31 pounds of liquid cocaine with the intent to distribute arising out of an arrest in 2000 and has served seven years of his 14-year sentence.
Four Christmases On Thanksgiving
November 26th, 2008During this year of high profile celebrity divorces (e.g., Christie Brinkley, Madonna, and Paul McCartney), today’s release of Four Christmases is a fitting collision between pop culture and law. Starring Reese Witherspoon and Vince Vaughn, Four Christmases follows couple struggling to visit all four of their divorced parents on Christmas Day. Enjoy!
MILK, Does A Few Theaters Good
November 26th, 2008On the heels of the Prop 8 controversy , Gus Van Sant’s new film, MILK, opens in limited theaters today. Starring Sean Penn, Emile Hirsch, and Diego Luna, the film follows the life of Harvey Milk, the first openly gay man elected to a public office (and later assassinated) in the United States.
MILK will be in theaters across the country on December 5.
Britney vs. K-Fed?
November 25th, 2008Popsquire’s favorite pop culture/law collision, Britney Spears, is revealing more than her bare midriff to Rolling Stone…
Gracing the cover of Rolling Stone yet again, Britney’s interview reveals that her kids “are starting to learn words like ’stupid,’ and Preston says the f-word now sometimes. He doesn’t get it from us. He must get it from his daddy. I say it, but not around my kids.”
Don’t expect any changes in her custody or visitation based on this statement. Family law judges rarely get involved in disputes over curse words, especially when the family has faced much bigger issues (i.e., 5150 holds). However, perhaps this is the beginning of a subtle media campaign to persuade the public that Brit is ready to be a more full-time parent.
Popsquire will keep you posted!
Madonna vs. Guy (The Money)
November 25th, 2008Guy Ritchie may be a Material Boy after all!
Contrary to earlier reports that Guy wasn’t asking for any of Madonna’s money, the NY Post reports that he will get enough for a very long Holiday:
Guy Ritchie gets about $70 million. He is not walking away “without a penny.” Please! He was no poor boy picked up from nowhere; so now he has to be compensated to support the life to which he has become accustomed. Guy Ritchie had a name and considerable cash when he and Madonna married. He’s earning about $4 million right now for directing “Sherlock Holmes.” But once you taste the really high life, you hold on if you can.
If this is true, $70 million is still a very small portion of M’s estimated $500 million fortune. Guy certainly could have requested and may have been granted much more in court!
The People vs. Michael Vick (Again)
November 25th, 2008Michael Vick is guilty. Duh.
The former NFL star quarterback/animal abuser pleaded guilty today to promoting dog fighting and not guilty to animal cruelty in Virginia. As part of a plea bargain, the second charge was dropped, and Vick was given a three-year suspended sentence.
Vick already is serving a 23-month federal jail sentence, but now is eligible to finish it out in a halfway house. His sentence ends July 20, 2009, after which he will serve three years of probation.
Let’s hope he’s learned his lesson, because Popsquire and Pam Anderson will be watching his every move!
Britney vs. Leaks
November 25th, 2008Following several illegal leaks of her upcoming album, Britney Spears now is providing a legal sneak peek of Circus. Enjoy!
Mother Goose vs. Erin Moran
November 25th, 2008The People vs. Boy George
November 24th, 2008Oh Boy…George!
Facing up to life in prison, Boy George is on trial in London for false imprisonment and assault. Today, Norwegian male model/escort Audun Carlsen testified that after “slapping me, beating me, punching me, and screaming things,” George handcuffed him to a hook in the bedroom wall in April 2007. He eventually escaped by unscrewing the hook and running into the street in his underwear.
If he has any chance of winning, George’s primary defense to these crimes must be consent — that the male model/escort was a willing participant in this violent romp. Yikes! Popsquire will keep you posted.
Travis Barker Speaks Out
November 24th, 2008In this interview with E! Online, Travis Barker explains why he filed a lawsuit arising out of the September crash that left him and DJ AM severely injured and four others dead. Popsquire can smell a settlement a mile away and will keep you posted!
Judges Won’t Let Blake Go, Go, Go!
November 24th, 2008Two London judges sent Blake Fielder-Civil back to Rehab today.
Amy Winehouse’s husband lost an appeal challenging his 27-month jail sentence this morning. As a reminder, Blake was sentenced for assaulting a pub landlord in 2006, as well as obstruction of justice when he attempted to bribe the landlord to stay quiet. Blake is expected to stay in a rehab facility for the remainder of his jail sentence.
