Sole physical custody is pretty self explanatory — it’s the person who has, for lack of a better term, physical possession of the kids.
Sole legal custody means that a parent has 100% control over any legal decisions pertaining to the kids, including medical and education issues.
Just to give you some perspective, many divorces result in joint legal custody so that both parents have the right to make medical and other legal decisions for the kids. In more extreme cases, however, courts do award sole legal custody to one parent.
